Photo courtesy BMW.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The BMW Group has signed a memorandum of understanding to source aluminum with significantly reduced CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions from Rio Tinto\u2019s hydro-powered operations, starting in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Rio Tinto\u2019s approach to manufacturing aluminum saves approximately 70 per cent of CO2\u00a0emissions compared to conventionally manufactured aluminum.<\/p>\n<p>The planned supply volumes will be used exclusively in vehicle production at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, in body components like the bonnet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada is a global destination of choice for low-carbon investment,\u201d said the Honourable Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne, Canada\u2019s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. \u201cThis exciting partnership between BMW and Rio Tinto is proof that Canada is well positioned to seize the economic benefits of the clean economy. I am proud to see that low-carbon Canadian aluminum will be going into BMW\u2019s vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada will continue to enhance our competitive advantages\u2014abundance of critical minerals, skilled labour, clean energy, proximity to markets\u2014to grow our economy and to support made-in-Canada innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aluminium occupies a firm place in the BMW Group\u2019s intelligent composite construction because of its comparatively low weight and other favourable material properties.<\/p>\n<p>Hydro-powered operation plants underline the tremendous potential of reducing CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0in the aluminum supply chain since approximately one-quarter of CO<sub>2\u00a0<\/sub>emissions are attributable to aluminum in the supply chain of a mid-sized, fully electric vehicle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The BMW Group has signed a memorandum of understanding to source aluminum with significantly reduced CO2\u00a0emissions from Rio Tinto\u2019s hydro-powered operations, starting in 2024.
