Blenheim Palace.

Blenheim Palace.

Today we head north to Blenheim Palace, a monumental country house situated in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England. It is the principal residence of the dukes of Marlborough and the only non-royal, non-Episcopal country house in England to hold the title of palace. Blenheim Palace, one of England’s largest houses, was built between 1705 and circa 1722. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

The palace was originally intended to be a reward to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, for his military triumphs. However, political infighting led to Churchill’s exile soon after construction began on the palace. Built in the rare and short-lived English Baroque style, architectural appreciation of the palace is as divided today as it was in the 1720s. The palace is also notable as the birthplace and ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill.

After lunch at one of the cafés or restaurant facilities available, pix-7-bicester-day-5we travel 30 minutes to Bicester Heritage Centre, the U.K.’s first purpose park for restoration, storage and enjoyment of vintage and classic cars, motorcycles and aeroplanes. Housed in a former 1920s RAF bomber station, Bicester Heritage is located on 348 acres and houses a wide variety of classic and vintage car specialists including two vintage car reengineered manufacturing companies, a variety of classic car service companies, upholstery and trim service companies plus several restoration companies, along with the Bicester Gliding club. Our guided tour of the facilities offers a unique look into the many aspects of maintaining a classic car, all in one unique location within an authentic pre–war, period-correct environment.
